College Student At A Glance

When you envision the average college student you think of a person between the ages of 18-24, single and parent dependant. This student usually attends college immediately after high school and has virtually no responsibilities except to study hard.

But this image is changing. At any give time you can look see this to be true on any campus. More and more you are seeing older students ranging from college freshmen to graduate students. These older students bring a whole new list of demands and expectations from their education institute.

Consider this, you are a 28 year college freshmen. Would you want to live in a dormitory or would you prefer an apartment? Your a single mother or father attempting to return to school full time, where would you live? Your a young married couple, possibly college sweet hearts, where would you live? How would you finance this apartment as well as a full-time college education. If you as moving to a new are, how would you find housing?

Ta-Dah!!! Family and Graduate Housing

Universities have taken notice to the change of college student demographics. They see that the typical college student is not the only type of college student. Graduate and Family housing is a direct response to the questions that many face when thinking of returning to college. This type of housing allows students to live on campus, have a fully functioning apartment, and have their family with them at a fraction of the cost.

Benefits of Family Housing

  • Family is on campus with you
  • Short commute to classes
  • Takes the fuss out of finding an apartment in new area
  • In most cases utilities a included
  • Financial aid pays all or portion of rent
  • Living in a great community that supports you education

This type of housing opens the door to many non- traditional students to take advantage of every possible avenue when it comes to education. This is a supporting community that has your best interesting mind. These communities have playgroups and daycare centers near by. Also there are campus organized activities for the families. This is a great choice for all those who thought they were to old or have to many responsibilities to go back to school

Colleges Across The Nation

I think it's a good idea for colleges to diversify and add choices for housing other than the traditional student. Good Hub.

Thanx. I love the idea of family housing. Many universities actually offer family housing, child care and other assistance for students with families.

I really agree with you on the family housing. I was raised on campus housing, and loved the access to academics and the fun things that go on on-campus. I am having a heck of a time now that I'm a non-traditional student finding a College/Uni with Family Housing on the east coast for my family. Little do Colleges and Universities understand, that by having family housing available, they increasing the chances of return customers (the children who grow up on their campuses). It's a great way to be raised and a great way for the parent/student to continue regular life and get ahead. Just wish there was more of it available!!

Thanks for the article!

There are a few colleges with programs specifically for single parents. I am applying to one in Massachusetts, but Pennsylvania, Ohio, and a few other East Coast locations have them!! It is great for young mothers/fathers to get that on campus experience even though they have a child!

NicoleCoe 20 months ago

You should add UMASS Amherst for Massachusetts

any in maine? I'm a 17 year old, had a baby, graduated and looking for schools in maine, any help will be greatly appreciated :D

Danielle 10 months ago

FYI: I attend University at Buffalo-Suny and they have family housing for single parents, married couples and even engaged couples and usually give priority to those students for housing. Its a state school but very well-respected as a research school and because of this, it is very reasonably. IJS
